Who needs a work permit?
All youth, under18 years of age, referred to as minors, must have a work permit to be employed. Work permits are actually issued to the EMPLOYER not the student.

Who may have a work permit?
Minors must attend school.  Minors not in school cannot be issued a Work Permit.  Below is the California Education Code.
•    49113.  A permit to work may be issued to a minor who is under the age of 18 years and over the age of 14 years who is regularly enrolled in a high school or community college or who has been assigned to a vocational course in a place of employment, and who will work part time as a properly enrolled pupil in a work experience education course that meets all the requirements of such course as provided in Sections 51760 to 51769, inclusive.

What do you need to get a work permit?
•    A social security number
•    A job
•    All required paperwork

Who completes the Statement of Intent to Employ Minor and Request for Work Permit?
This form, usually green, has three parts that must be completed before the actual permit may be issued.  The top section is to be completed by the student.  The employer completes the second section.   The parent signs the third section.  The school personnel issuing the permit complete the last section.

Where do you get a work permit?
California Education Code permits public, charter and private schools with authorization to issue work permits.  All Work Experience Teacher-Coordinators in LAUSD schools have authorization to issue permits. At VNHS, see Mrs. Giller in the Career Center, room 119B.

What do you need to bring with you when you go to get your work permit?

Students attending Van Nuys High need only complete the “Request for a Work Permit”.

Students NOT attending Van Nuys High must have extra documentation.  The following documents must also be attached to the “Request for a Work Permit”:

1. For private or home schooled students, on school letterhead, a letter from the principal     stating your date of birth, grade, and school attendance.  For another LAUSD school an     ID01 will suffice.

 AND

2. A copy of a document showing the student’s date of birth such as a passport, Certificate     of Birth, driver’s license, etc.  During the summer you may accept a copy of the latest report card because there is no mandatory school attendance in effect.

Does a work permit expire?
All work permits expire 5 days after the start of the new school year.

Can my work permit be cancelled or be refused issuance?
Yes.  The person that issues permits does not have to issue or may cancel a work permit if s/he feels the youth’s health or education is jeopardized, conditions of the permit are being violated, or the minor work is in violation of the law.  For safety reason, under the law, there are many jobs a minor is not allowed to perform.  (California Education Code 49164)
