School Rules & Policies
Code of Conduct
Van Nuys Students Are Expected To:
- Attend school every day and be on time ot all classes.
- Treat others and youself with respect and dignity.
- Report to the dean if you ever have a problem with another student.
- Cooperate fully and work to the best of your ability.
- Keep our campus clean by disposing of litter properly.
- Take care of all books and equipment.
- Have your school ID at all times while on campus.
- Get a hall pass if you are sent from class for any reason.
- Bring a note from home if you must leave school early or when returning to school from an absence.
Van Nuys Students may not:
- Wear clothing that is vulgar or display's profanity.
- Wear or openly possess non-Van Nuys High School hats.
- Possess beepers.
- Wear bare-midriff tops or other revealing styles.
- Operate or openly possess radios or walk-mans.
- Possess cigarettes, matches, spray paint, or markers.
- Display any clothing, items, or mannerisms associated with gangs, taggers, crews, posses, or any non-school clubs. This includes pants that are oversized or below the waist, long shorts with high socks, belt buckles with lettering, bandannas, rags, or chains.
Consequences:
- Thirty to ninety minutes of detention will be assigned for tardiness, misbehavior, leaving class without a hall pass, or failing ot bring school ID.
- Prohibited items will be confiscated.
- Suspension will result from infractions such as defianc, failing to serve detention, making statements that are sexist or racist, damagaing school property, or possession of matches, lighters, tobacco, fireworks, marking pens, or spray cans.
- Suspension, citation, arrest, opportunity transfer, or/and expulsion will result from infractions such as threats, fighting, possession of alcohol or illegal drugs, gambling, truancy, gang activity, smoking, vandalism, theft, possession of stolen property, commission of a criminal act, or possession of a weapon or any item that could be used as a weapon. Possession of a gun will cause arrest, suspension, and expulsion.

Honor Code
Every faculty member and studennt at Van Nuys high School belongs to a community of scholars where academic integrity and the pursuit of excellence are fundamental commitments. Students come to this school not only to improve their minds, gain knowledge, and develop skills that will assist them in their life's work, but also to build chracter. This Ethical Contract is intended to promote and protect an atmosphere of trust, fairness, and respect at Van Nuys High School.
Definitions:
Cheating:
Cheating is a form of dishonesty where a studnet attempts to give the appearance of a level of knowledge or skill that the student has not obtained.
Examples include:
- copying from another person's work during an examination or while completing an assignment.
- Allowing someone to copy during an examination or while completing an assignment.
- Using any unauthorized materials not specifically approved by the instructor during any exam or while compleing any assigned work.
- Collaborating on any group or individual assignment without the direct authorization of the instructor.
- Taking an examination or completing an assigment for another, or permitting another to take an examination or to complete an assignment for you.
- Altering a graded work after it has been returned, then submitting the work for regrading.
- Submitting identical or similar papers for credit in more than one course without prior permission from the course instructors.
- Stealing, reproducing, circulating, or otherwise gaining access to examination materials prior to the time authorized by the instructor.
- Retaining, possessing, using or circulating previously given examination materials, where those materials clearly indicate they are to be retuned to the instructor at the conlusion of the examination.
- Providing false information in connection with any inquiry regarding academic integrity.
- Falsifying of records and/or official documents: academic recors; grade repots, letter of permission, add/drop forms, ID cards, lunch passes, absence excuses, parent notes, etc.
- Continuing work on an examination or assignment after the allocated time has elapsed.
Plagiarism:
Plagiarism is a form of intellectual theft that violates widely recognized principles of academic integrity. It is the verbatim repetition or paraphrasing, without acknowledgement, of another person's writing. Violations Include:
- Copying another student's work and submitting it as one's own work.
- Using any other person or organization to prepare work which one then submits as his/her own.
- Paraphrasing the thoughts of another writer without acknowledgement.
- Citing a source that does not exist.
- Attributing to a source ideas and information that are not included in the source.
- Citing a source in a bibliography when the source was neither consulted nor cited in the body of the paper.
- Intentionally distorting the meaning or applicability of data.
- Inventing data or statistical results to support conclusions.
Other:
Any other misconduct which includes other academically dishonest, deceitful, or inappropriate acts. Examples of such acts include but are not limited to:
- Pressuring another or encouraging another student to participate in any violation of the ethics code.
- Planning with another to commit any act of academic dishonesty.
- Profiting financially or othersie from the advocation and/or support of any unethical act.
Consequences for Violations of Ethical standards
Any violations of this code occuring in the classroom will be subject to penalties established by the classroom teacher. The classroom teacher may, in addition, refer the incident to the cousneling office. THese referral, or any violations occuring outside the classroom, will be subject ot an additional disciplianry actions extablised by the cousneling office.
Sancations may include but are not limited to:
- Reduced or failing grade.
- Notification of parents.
- Suspension from school.
- Parent conference.
- Required parent attendance with student in class.
- A letter of reprimand.
- Signing of a probationary contract to be placed in the student cumulative record.
- Notification of offense in school disciplinary computer record.
- Notification to other current teachers.
- Exclusion from school activities such as graduation activities, dances, sporting events, field trips, hospital assignment, etc.
- Loss of college recommendation letters.
- Any appropriate combination of the above.
The ethical standars for behavior at VNHS serve as framework, for the development of good character. Adherence to such standards engenders the integrity and turst necessary for a flouring academic community where both teachers and students can thrive.

Tardy Policy
The tardy policy at Van Nuys High School is designed to promote better student achievement by: 1) Encouraging students to be on time to class; 2) Reducing the amount of instructional time lost to interruptions caused by students who arrive late to class and; 3) Involving students, parents, and staff as partners in finding solutions to student punctuality problems. This policy re-enforces the propositions that regular attendance and punctuality to class are important factors that will improve student achievement. We believe that being on time to class is an act of courtesy toward your teachers and fellow students.
- Tardy Lock-out Policy and Procedure
Students who are tardy to class are subject to the following consequences:
- First Tardy: Student given a warning, parent notified, a special PRC (Permit to Re-enter Class) issued, and student allowed to go to class.
- Second Tardy: Student must remain in "Tardy Lock-out" for the entire
period. Parent notified. Student will be assigned 1 day of "Campus Beautification"*
during lunch. Un-excused tardy slip placed in Teacher�s mailbox.
- Third Tardy: Student must remain in "Tardy Lock-out" for the entire
period. Parent notified by mail. Student will be assigned 2 days of "Campus
Beautification" during lunch. Un-excused tardy slip placed in Teacher�s
mailbox.
- Fourth Tardy: Student must remain in "Tardy Lock-out" for the entire
period. Dean�s office will hold a conference with the student and notify
his/her parent. Student will be assigned 5 days of "Campus Beautification"
during lunch. Un-excused tardy slip placed in Teacher�s mailbox.
- Fifth Tardy: Student must remain in "Tardy Lock-out" for the entire
period. Dean�s office will hold a conference with the student and his/her
parent. Student will be assigned 5 days of "Campus Beautification" during
lunch. Un-excused tardy slip placed in Teacher�s mailbox.
*Campus Beautification will consist of paper pick-up for the last 15 minutes of Lunch. Students will report to Mr. Emery in the Covered Lunch Area by 12:45 p.m. to complete this assignment.
- Period by Period Procedure
- Students who are late to class must report to the Covered Lunch Area after the ringing of the tardy bell.
- Students must sign in at "Tardy Lock-out" and identify themselves with a Van Nuys High School I.D. card.
- Students will be given a packet of work to compete while in the "Tardy Lock-out."
- Students will be assigned "Campus Beautification" during Lunch. Students are to report to the Covered Lunch Area by 12:45 on the day assigned to complete this assignment.
- Students With Parent Notes
Students with notes for legitimate excuses for being late will do the following:
- Students may bring the note to "Tardy Lock-out" and the note will be processed. Parents will be notified that the note was received. Consequences enumerated above may apply.
- Parents may bring students to the Attendance Office in person to clear tardies.
